Reading the research
Understanding .LY domain counts
A registered name does not necessarily host a website. These definitions explain what each measure can tell you.
- Registered domains
- Names recorded in a registry database at a specified time. The source must state which namespaces and registration statuses are included.
- Delegated domains
- Names with a delegation in the relevant parent DNS zone. Delegation is a technical state, not proof of website activity.
- Observed domains
- Names discovered by a particular dataset, crawl or measurement process. Coverage depends on that source and is not a registry census.
- Domains with DNS records
- Names for which specified record types were found at measurement time. The query policy, record types and treatment of errors must be disclosed.
- Active websites
- Websites meeting an explicit response and content policy. Redirects, parking pages, access restrictions and unreachable sites need separate treatment.

Adoption needs a denominator
The underlying DNSSEC source supplies a numerator and denominator. Equivalent namespace-wide measurements for HTTPS, IPv6 and CAA were not established by this review.
