Sequence follows NIC.LY FAQ, Q5. The expired period is an explanatory stage, not an additional EPP status. Timing is not to scale.
Two different clocks
Renewal grace is not DNS availability.
Register.ly's renewal grace is up to 5 days after expiry. NIC.LY says DNS removal and ServerHold begin 1 day after expiry.
A name may still be renewable while its website and email are already interrupted. The period before redemption is not a promise of ordinary renewal for 45 days.
Websites, email and other DNS-dependent services may stop resolving.

Registrar renewal grace
Check eligibility immediately. Payment or an invoice alone is not confirmation of renewal.

Estimate your .LY lifecycle dates
Enter the expiration date shown in your domain record. This estimates calendar dates only; it does not query WHOIS or confirm that a domain is recoverable.
How long does the full process take?
The published sequence suggests deletion roughly 80 days after expiry: 45 days to redemption, then 30 days of redemption and 5 days pending deletion.
This is a derived estimate, not a guaranteed release date. Check the actual registry status before relying on a date.

These dates are estimates based on current published lifecycle durations. Always verify the actual domain status before taking action.

What happens at each stage?
Act on your domain's confirmed status, not just the number of days since expiry.
Stage 01
Active
Before expiration
An active .LY domain remains registered for its agreed term, provided no separate registry or policy action affects it. NIC.LY permits registration terms of 1 to 10 years; the term available for your name is confirmed when ordering.
Correctly configured DNS, websites and email normally operate. Eligible active, unlocked domains may be transferred. Renew before expiration and confirm that renewal actually completed.
What should you do before your .LY expires?
Renew early and check the new expiry date after confirmation.
Keep registrant, administrative and account contacts current.
Check notices, invoices and the payment method; auto-renew does not guarantee automatic payment or successful processing.
Keep a reachable contact email that does not depend on the expiring domain.
Complete an intended transfer while the name is active, with an unlocked domain, accurate contact emails and authorization code.
Reaching the expiration date means the registration term has ended without completed renewal. The name is not immediately released. NIC.LY’s published sequence removes it from the .LY DNS zone and places it on ServerHold 1 day(s) later.
What does ServerHold mean?
ServerHold is a registry-level status that prevents normal DNS publication. Websites, email, subdomains, APIs, VPN hostnames and DNS-based verification may stop resolving.
DNS suspension does not by itself delete website files, mailboxes or hosting data. Domain status and hosting are separate systems. Do not assume the cause of every website outage is expiration.
Following expiry and ServerHold, the domain remains in the expired part of its lifecycle before redemption. NIC.LY identifies day 45 after expiry as the transition to redemptionPeriod.
The recovery route depends on the current status and registrar rules. After Register.ly’s limited grace window, ask support which options remain; do not assume standard renewal stays available. An expired or suspended domain must return to eligible active status before transfer.
A domain that no longer loads in a browser is not necessarily available to register.
The registry status becomes redemptionPeriod for 30 days. This is a recovery stage, not an opportunity for someone else to register the name.
What does redemption mean for recovery?
Restoration, rather than standard renewal, is required. The registrar may optionally request it through the registry process. Verification, additional fees and registry approval may apply; a request is not a guarantee of recovery.
Transfer is not available in this stage. If the domain is managed by another registrar, contact that registrar for the applicable restoration process.
After redemption, the name enters pendingDelete. NIC.LY states that recovery in this 5-day stage can only be performed by NIC.LY, not through ordinary registrar restoration.
Standard renewal and transfer are unavailable. The name is still not open to public registration. Register.ly’s operational policy treats renewal, restoration and transfer as generally unavailable here; the registry-only exception is not a promised customer recovery option.
If the domain is critical, contact support for registry guidance immediately. Any exceptional recovery depends on NIC.LY and should not be assumed available.
The FAQ says that deletion after pending delete returns the name to public registration. Actual availability and eligibility must be checked at the time of ordering.
When can someone else register it?
After release, another eligible applicant may register the name. The previous registrant has no automatic reservation or priority. Waiting for deletion can therefore mean losing the domain permanently.
A new registration is not a restoration of the former registration or its services. A calculated release date does not secure a name.
Extends an existing registration while normal renewal is still permitted.
Restoration
Recovers a name from a registry recovery stage, subject to its requirements.
Re-registration
Creates a new registration after deletion and release. Former ownership gives no automatic priority.

Can an expired .LY be transferred?
Register.ly's policy requires expired or suspended .LY names to be restored to eligible active status first. A transfer is not a way to bypass expiration or redemption.
Complete transfers while active. The registry's published requirements include an unlocked name, accurate registrant and administrative emails, and an authorization code.
Prepare before you move
Confirm eligibility and allow time for approvals before expiry. Transfer moves registrar management; it does not automatically move your website files or mailboxes.
Registration, DNS publication, website hosting and email are separate layers. A domain can be active while a website is misconfigured; an expired domain may stop resolving while its files still exist.
What happens to the website?
Without working DNS, visitors may be unable to reach the .LY address even when the hosting server and website files are still present.
After successful recovery, DNS publication and caches may need time to update. There is no promised exact recovery time.
What happens to email?
If the domain's MX records cannot be resolved, senders may be unable to locate the receiving mail servers. New messages can be delayed, fail or bounce, depending on the sender's system.
Existing mailbox data depends on the separate email or hosting service. Domain expiry alone does not determine whether that data still exists.
Common questions
.LY expiration, explained
How long after expiration does a .LY stop working?
The published registry sequence removes the name from the .LY zone and sets ServerHold 1 day(s) after expiry. DNS-dependent services may then stop working; actual status and cached DNS can affect what users see.
Can I renew after my .LY expires?
Register.ly’s normal post-expiry grace is up to 5 days, subject to status and successful processing. Do not wait for that window: contact support immediately if renewal is unavailable.
What is ServerHold?
It is a registry-level status preventing normal DNS publication. It can interrupt websites, email and other services, but does not itself delete hosting or mailbox data.
What is the .LY redemption period?
The current FAQ places redemption approximately 45 days after expiry and gives it a 30-day duration. The domain is still not available for a new registration.
Can a .LY be recovered during redemption?
The registrar may optionally request restoration during redemption. Registry status, verification, processing and applicable fees determine whether it succeeds. Ordinary renewal should not be assumed available.
Can a .LY be restored during pending delete?
NIC.LY alone can perform any recovery in the published 5-day pending-delete stage. This is not a guaranteed recovery service. Contact support for guidance if the domain is critical.
When does an expired .LY become available again?
After pending deletion is completed and the name is deleted and released. The published periods imply roughly 80 days from expiry, but that is an estimate, not a guaranteed availability date.
Can I transfer an expired .LY?
Not while it remains expired or suspended under Register.ly’s policy. It must return to eligible active status first. Complete transfers before expiry and check the registry’s other eligibility requirements.
Will my hosting files be deleted if my domain expires?
Losing DNS resolution does not by itself delete files. Hosting retention, payments and termination are governed by the separate hosting service. Check that service’s status and maintain independent backups.
Will my email stop working?
It may. Without working DNS and MX records, new delivery can fail or be delayed. Existing mailbox content is governed by your email provider’s separate service and retention terms.
Can I get the same domain back after deletion?
Only if it is still available and you meet the current registration requirements. There is no automatic priority for the former registrant, and another applicant may register it first.
